I went to get a second opinion. This Gyn. examined me for less than twenty seconds and kicked my husband and me out of the office claiming he sexually abused me and said he never wanted to see my kind again. --Sandi, Placentia, CT (Mathmatician and University Valedictorian)

I went to a Gyn. in L.A. when I was about 32. He told me I had an anatomical problem that required surgery.--Sue, Los Angeles, CA

I don't understand this pain or what you're so concerned about, everything looks fine.--Catherine, VA

After seeing the nurse practitioner at a Vulvar Clinic, for more than a year, I finally requested to see my doctor, since my treatment was not working. When I told her that I couldn't afford the biofeedback (I was unemployed at the time and they do not accept insurance), and asked for other options, she literally yelled at me and told me "If your boyfriend was so concerned about sex, then he could pay for the biofeedback!" I also told her that I could not take the amitryptaline because I was a zombie all day, she said "Well, that's all I can offer. Keep taking it."--Stacy, New York

When I told my first GYN about my pain she said "It's nothing, just relax and use lubrication. Your pain is not physical." I told her, that the pain is always the same, it never gets better or worse with my mood... she did not care... she just finished the consultation and never asked me anything again. The next doctor I found, told me that everything is normal "down there"... He told me to "stop having intercourse and to practice with small candles (instead of Dildos)." I came back a few month later and told him, that it does not help at all. He told me, "If sex is not permitted, you will get more interested in having Intercourse again." --Rahel, Switzerland

After being examined and tested by my female Internal Medicine doctor for 4 months with no results and no diagnosis, the doctor stated that my flora was disturbed and that I just had to have a baby and it would all be taken care of; that my symptoms would disappear. --Nichole, Michigan

Doctor #1 was a primary care physician. When he did my pelvic, I about lept off the table in pain. His response was, "Why did that hurt? That shouldn't hurt. Next time take some aspirin before you come in for this kind of examination." He was promtly fired as my doctor. Doctor #2 was an aging ob/gyn who was a well-known local politician. He said, "I bet after you have a few kids it won't hurt anymore!" I asked him what to do in the meantime. He gave me testosterone cream, an extremely outdated potion, that made the condition worse and me almost uncontrollably horny. He also was fired later on by me. --Courtney Escondido, CA

I went to see my gyn and she said that it was normal that tampons and fingers will hurt because I was a virgin, "You just have sex and everything will go away." I disagreed with her so she sent me to see a midwife who said: "why are you concerned about this now if you don't have a partner?" She also asked why was I a virgin at my age(31)..."you are an old girl" she said and recommended that I not use tampons and get a boyfriend before looking for a cure for VVS. --Laura, New York

First I went to a female gynecologist. She told me that I should never have oral sex again! I was very unhappy with this, so I consulted another doctor. That doctor said that type of sex is the most normal for everyone! Boy was I relieved! I also went to a doctor for VV who prescribed Kenalog shots. He said it would feel like bee stings and have not other ill effects. Well he was wrong. I had severe burning into my left leg and buttock. I got a period that would not stop for 6 weeks, and had to be stopped with hormones. He stated that he was surprised and seemed doubtful because no one else had ever had this reaction. That did not feel supportive at all. I was actually made worse by his treatment for months. He would not even prescribe a pain med. --Anne, New York

The "best" advice I received from a GYN was to "have a glass of wine and try to relax..you are uptight." And from the same doc - "It's all in your head...maybe if you lost a little weight you wouldn't be so self conscious in bed." --Christine, Colorado

I have suffered from vulval vestibulitis/vulvodynia since 1997. I went to see my GP (family doctor) a few years ago because I had a chest infection and was feeling very poorly. Unfortunately my regular GP was unavailable so I saw the locum (stand in). He duly prescribed some antibiotics and then asked whether I was OK becasue I was a little tearful. I said that I was feeling very down beacsue the pain in my vulva was worse than usual and that the Genito Urinary Clinic (in England we call it the GU for short) hadn't been very helpful when I had my appointmnet with them the previous day. The Doctor cut me short and asked why had I been to the GU? I replied that I had vulval vestibilutis. Again he cut me short and said in the most patronising way, "My dear (laugh) I think you mean that you went to the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) clinic!", I repied "no, it was definitely the GU" again he laughed at me and said "no, it must have been the ENT - the vestibule is in your ear", he then offered me some happy pills(!) whilst shaking his head. I acidly replied "no thank you, I don't care where your vestible is but mine is in the entrance to my vagina, I suggest you check your notes". Needless to say I have refused to be his patient ever since. Unfortunately I am still in pain, I'm 29, and I'm still searching for the 'cure' - just not at the Ear Nose and Throat clinic!--Sarah, England

I went to my doctor...the one who had prescribed 38 different antibiotics for my "infection". I couldn't even wear underwear at this point due to the pain. He said," Stop reinfecting yourself, or I won't be your doctor anymore." I had no infection. And I made sure he was no longer my doctor.--Diane, Connecticut

I was sent to a "specialist" to confirm that I did in fact have vestibulitis as my symptoms were different than any of the other women who are suffering that saw my doctor at the time. The "specialist" introduced himself in the hallway and then proceded to tell me that he closed his vulvar clinic 4 years ago "because of women like you". After examination and confirmation that I indeed DO have VVS, I was shushed at every attempt to ask any questions. I was also told that if I found a way to make myself better to give him a call so he could pass it along to his other patients, I was given a prescription for Elavil and told to up my doseage slowly and that I could take as many as I wanted. He said all of his 400 Vulvodynia/Vestibulitis patients are given Elavil by him.-- Candi, Florida
